The Wisdom of the Threads
The Folk Magic of Spinning, Binding, and Weaving In the North

May 25th, 2 hour workshop In-person: 12:30-2:30 PM
Located at the Quarry Arts Building
715 Hill Street Madison WI 53703

Taught by Hayley, Trolldom Practitioner and Teacher

About The Class:

From 50,000-year-old burial mound cordage to the Norns who wove the threads of fate, this class explores how spinning, weaving, and knotwork are seen as inherently magical and intimately connected to the creation of life and the soul in Nordic folklore and myth. Students will be introduced to how cloth, knots, and thread are utilized in Nordic folk magic and divination, and they will also learn about the spirits and stories behind these arts. Participants will come away with knowledge of traditional folk magic methods, the symbolism behind folk embroidery, the stories of old feminine magics, the use of fiber and fiber tools in seiðr, the connection between fiber arts and life itself, and more.

The practices of twisting, knotting, and weaving date back to the Neolithic period and are some of our oldest technologies; participating in this work helps to connect us to many generations of ancestors. Come and be inspired to live by the old ways and our ancestral traditions. If you are interested in fiber arts, folkways, Trolldom, Nordic folk healing, stories of seiðr, plant magic, goddesses, poetry, or the Sagas, this would be a great class for you to join.
