Time Magic: Advanced Astrological Magic for the Folk Practitioner

Writer's picture: hayleyahustonhayleyahuston

Introduction to My Astrological Magic Method

After nearly eight years of personal practice and exploration, I share my method for integrating astrological magic into a folk magic methodology. The method is based on information from the Picatrix and the Hygromanteia, as well as other sources such as writings by Vettius Valens, and Abu Ma’shar.

I would recommend utilizing this timing in addition to your usual folk magic methods, rather than incorporating structured ceremony, stone-based talismans, and the preset prayers/materials that these sources recommend. I find that those structures are not usually necessary if you are a seasoned practitioner. You can simply incorporate sophisticated timings into your magical practice to become a time magician of sorts, and to better align with the universal clock that is always running in the background.

The transits, hours, and planetary days simply describe an energy present at a specific moment in time that can be harvested for later use, or leveraged to empower the magic you are already doing. Rather than planetary timing being the magic itself, I like to see it as a sophisticated clock for the skilled magician.

Below is a step-by-step process on how to integrate astrological timing into folk magic. I have also included planetary significations to inspire new spell-casting ideas.

Enjoy.

Targets

First, you will want to consider what you would like to aim for in your magical work i.e. your targets.

For this, I recommend making a spreadsheet where you write down as many intentions, spell ideas, sigil statements, petitions, etc. I also recommend categorizing them based on the topic. For example: health, wealth, leadership, teaching, wisdom, love, beauty, skill, business, technical ability, artistry, learning, etc.

Consider downloading the Google Sheets app and writing spell ideas down as they come to you throughout the day on your phone. Formulating spell targets is its own skill and form of magic. The practice of this orients you towards certain goals and changes your direction. You may find things will start to unfold for you even before casting.

If you are doing intentions, petitions, or sigils, I would recommend writing phrases that are in the present and positive, without any time-bound conditions or limitations. There are many sources online on how to write “manifestations,” this guidance would work in planetary magic as well.

Some examples of target statements: collaborate with many wonderful local leaders, publish a best-selling book, higher income than ever, fruitful dream life, deep understanding of folk magic, digest ancestral wisdom, sigils always manifest, deep connection to nature, unexpected windfalls cover my expenses, fun co-workers, gym buddy, my interviews always impress, I generate money with ease, money spent comes back 10x, I'm healthy and have lots of energy, healthy hair, age with grace, 200 local friends, CEOs sing my praises, interesting life, abundant synchronicities… you get the idea.

Other spell ideas (for talismans, poppets, candles, oils…): Supports magical ability, supports connection to ancestors, offers the energy of spring, summer, fall, or winter, grace, beauty, gain attention and praise, enhanced creativity, creation of beautiful art, protection of business assets, increased sexual energy, supports passion in marriage, encourages eloquence of voice, supports gratitude of what one has, enhanced visibility of website/offerings, supports bringing in more clients, supports healthy lifestyle, supports becoming very physically fit (aka yoked!!), supports ability to learn, encourages creativity in poetic and literary expression, offers friendship and community…

Order of Importance in Spellwork

  1. Planetary Day (focus on getting this correct first)

  2. Lunar day and/or what sign the Moon is in (Lunar days are not talked about in this post, the sign the Moon is in is of secondary importance to planetary day)

  3. Hourly Spirits, or planetary hours (Important, but the last piece to consider when planning timing)

Getting the Timing Right: Planetary Hours

The general rule of thumb is to do Sun things on Sundays, moon-y things on Moon’s day, Venus stuff on Friday, etc. It is also generally advisable to cast during the planetary ruler’s hour. So, cast during Venus’s hour during Venus’s day for Venusian magic. Planetary hours can be calculated here.

Each hour of the day is ruled by planetary intermediary spirits. More information about hourly spirits can be found in the Hygromanteia if you would like the names of the spirits. However, I would recommend starting with addressing Venus with a prayer during Venus’s hour before magical workings, and asking if she would be willing to support your work. I typically just say a genuine, from-the-heart prayer to the planet and give an offering. You may use the Orphic hymns instead of a simple prayer, these can be found with a quick Google search: “Venus orphic hymn.”

If you want a more folk magic approach, address the hourly spirits from the Hygromanteia as you would any spirit. Before casting anything, address the spirit of the hour and have a conversation to see what they do and what they are like. Then if they seem to be a good spirit for your work, invite them in and let them know what you aim to achieve. Give an offering and ask for their assistance.

Blessed Planets and Transits

Spellwork can be extra potent when planets have dignity, meaning they are placed in a sign they rule or are exalted in. I would recommend noting in a calendar when planets will be transiting signs where they have dignity and consider casting on the day they rule (a digital Ephemeris is a good place to look at yearly transits). So, when Venus enters Pisces, mark your calendars for those Fridays to do Venus spellwork. Consider making a spirit house for Venus to bring in that energy during her transit, and also give offerings to the Venusian intermediary spirits during this time.

Venus: Domicile: Libra and Taurus, Exalted: Pisces (Venus will transit these in 2025)

Jupiter: Domicile: Sagittarius and Pisces, Exalted: Cancer (Jupiter will be in Cancer in June 2025)

Mars: Domicile: Scorpio and Aries, Exalted: Capricorn (Mars will transit these in 2025)

Sun: Domicile: Leo, Exalted: Aries (Hits both these each year regularly)

Saturn: Domicile: Aquarius and Capricorn, Exalted: Libra (will not be in these signs soon)

Mercury: Domicile: Virgo and Gemini, Exalted: Virgo (moves into these signs somewhat regularly)

Moon: Domicile: Cancer, Exalted: Taurus (moves into these signs very regularly)

Bonus points if you have a blessed planet in your natal chart, that would mean these times would be extra potent for you to cast

Understanding the Moon

The next thing to consider is where the Moon is on any given day. If the Moon is in a sign that the ruler of the planetary day has domicile, then it would be an extra potent day for spellwork. For example, if the Moon enters Virgo on a Wednesday, then that would be an extra potent day to do Mercurial magic since the Moon would be supporting work in that sphere and making it more accessible. The Moon is described as the planet that manifests celestial planetary energy on Earth.

Monday: Moon in Cancer (good Monday for Moon magic)

Tuesday: Moon in Aries or Scorpio (good Tuesday for Mars magic)

Wednesday: Moon in Gemini or Virgo (good Wednesday for Mercury magic)

Thursday: Moon in Sagittarius or Pisces (good Thursday for Jupiter magic)

Friday: Moon in Libra or Taurus (good Friday for Venus magic)

Saturday: Moon in Aquarius or Capricorn (good Saturday for Saturn magic)

Sunday: Moon in Leo (good Sunday for Sun magic)

Casting Sequence

When casting, follow this general guidance:

  1. First, acknowledge the ruler of the hour (whether using planets or spirits)

  2. Then acknowledge the ruler of the day (Venus on Friday, Jupiter on Thursday, etc)

  3. Acknowledge the mansion the Moon is in or the lunar day (if doing this)

  4. Give offerings

  5. Cast spell

Other Thoughts

I generally avoid treating the planets like gods, which you tend to see in the Astro magic community. I am not interested in placing a planet above me in a hierarchy. I generally enjoy relating to them as a companion or ally, rather than be religiously reverent. I do recommend creating a spirit house for a planetary energy you are working with, and/or giving weekly offerings of incense, water, wine, fruits, coffee, butter, milk, etc. I also like acknowledging the planetary ruler of the day, each day, just as a courtesy. This tends to make personal transits go better.
